im new to photoshop, im trying to open raw files that i have taken on my Nikon D7000 in photoshop CS4 extended..
im getting an error saying cannot open that kind of file or something like that.. im just using the normal open file command in the menu..
is there anything specifc i have to do to open a raw file
the raw files are named with an extension .NEF if that makes it any easier to help

Download NX view.
Convert it to PSD/TIFF/JPEG
Then open in photoshop.

Or, there should be a program that comes with the camera.
It's own software has an image editor, use that to convert it.

Chances are indeed that your raw format is newer than your ACR. Try going through Lightroom or C1 though, as the quality and control considerably better :).

I had to download a plug-in before photoshop would read the raw files from my 550D. Just let photoshop do an automatic update and it should download it.
