Semi Slick Track Tyres

1.5J 180's Photo 1.5J 180 17 Apr 2017

Hey,

Thought I'd throw up a post as looking at some new rear tyres for the 180. Know there is a recent thread, but didn't really get to the bottom of reviews and a comparison of the selections I'm looking at. Mainly use the car for driver skill and circuit and coffee style events.

Looking at the cheaper, second tier range of semi slicks (bang for your buck - not Z221, A050 etc.), and unfortunately I'm on a 19 inch rim for now, but plenty of room and looking at the 275-295 width.

Selections I'm looking at as follows.

- Toyo R888 (availability difficult in 19)
- Nitto NTO1 (availability difficult in 19)
- Nitto NT05
- Hankook Z222 RS3
- Federal 595RSRR

Comparisons and opinions welcomed.

Z221 Hankook is a good semi.
The ones you've listed in bold are NOT semis, regardless of what every tyre shop says.

I would go RS3 for a car that's mainly for street use.

achillies 123s??

ive got r888s on atm. feel ok on the road, no grip for the first few kms till they warm up, so keep that in mind. took them for 5x 15min track sessions on the druitt circuit, but my car will do under 1000kms on the road each year

123s are not a semi, more a dual purpose Street/motorsport tyre. I have used them and they did grip quite well, probably on par with federal rsr but they did not last. 2 track days and 3-4000 km on the street and they where gone.

ku36s are ok, i had them on my 180 for almost 5 years, did about 5 track days on them, a world time attack, plus a power cruise event etc.. got around the gp circuit at sydney in 1.50 secs,

i had the 255/40/17 on a 17x9, i think the most common size these days in 265/35/18s and you can often pick up cheap ad05s after events from sponsored teams after race meets,

not much option in 19s, ive even looking at changing my rims to 18s in the future

i dont think semis will get you over 3/5000 kms anyway.

I'm currently running ad08r 265/35/18. Have done 3 track days and 7000km on them and they still look to be around 80% tread. I've also bought a 2nd set of wheels and bought proper semi slicks (A050 softs 255/40/18) have done 3 track days on those and they look to have 2 maybe 3 more track days in them. I managed to get fantastic deals on both, the ad08r I got for 260 each when they had buy 3 get 1 free. The A050 set me back 200 each (2 year old stock) that was a bargain. I can't justify retail prices for Yokohamas but at the above rates I would never buy anything else. Sadly I doubt I'll ever get those sort of deals again.

I live in budget land. Probably going to try nankang ar1 next time around, unless I get some super deal again.

I had a lot of success with the NT-01s but I may give the Nankang AR-1 a go for my next practice set.

NT01 are ok, but experiencing Z221 or the likes is just like comparing vanilla to salted caramel
