Timing issue

Recommended Posts

Motor - rb20

Hey guys after some help or constructive criticism if I've done anything wrong

Installed new timing belt, water pump spark plugs and fuel filter at the same time

basically got it running, took for a drive up the street, all spool and flutter and no power.

So running mega retarded

Checked timing and it's 30 degrees advanced... Cas at fully retarded have me 25 degrees advanced

Pulled it all off and re did the belt for peace of mind

Every mark is spot on to FSM and teeth between marks match

Started it up. And it sounds like a wrx, timing says like 55 or more degrees advanced

Thought the belt may have slipped or something

Tore it down again and belt is fine still on all marks

Tried a spare cas didn't do anything

Checked plugs and I got supplied wrong plugs (rb25) and I need rb20 so I'll buy them tomorrow

Plugs are burnt very white

Does anyone have any ideas ...

Gonna check for ecu codes ASAP too

Timing is done on the loop at rear of motor but I will rig up a coil pack lead to get a better reading

So somehow it drives like the ecu detects pinging so It fully retards it

And base timing is crazy advanced and runs like crap

Cheers

have you triple checked?

I had the same issue, turns out my belt skipped a tooth.. when you put the belt on, rotate the motor a few times until you are 100% it's right

Yeah I've done it 3 times now

I'll rotate it a few more times but don't see how it'd skip a tooth

When I checked it all after running it, it was still in the right spot

We'll I've tried two cas' now and they both worked fine before :(

Get a spark plug lead and attach it between the coil pack and spark plug take the timing from there.

Yeah I said id do that next haha

Still won't solve my problem, will give me a better reading though

If key way was off then the marks wouldn't line up

The crank pulley mark on the belt wouldn't line up with the timing gear cover

Which they all do according to the FSM

Exact number of teeth between marks as per the FSM too. I have pictures of it all

I need to fiddle with my idle and a coil pack spark plug wire

Oh actually, key way on the crank pulley could be out, your right

Yeah just realised what ya meant after I posted, I think I've almost solved it, didn't realise to get base timing right I had to disconnect the tps

So did that, using normal timing light, fiddled with cas and re checked the belt, got it to sit around 15-20 degrees advanced ,

Missfire was broken coil pack loom, so it's idling mint now, need to throw few bits back on and do a proper timing test and then test drive it.. Up my driveway haha

So ecu is showing no fault codes in diagnostic mode

Yet the ecu is still pulling timing

Base timing is good though

I'm going to bypass the knock sensor and see what happens

Most likely a code would have come up

But the knock sensor could be sending the wrong info to the ecu

I'm 99% sure the knock sensor needs to be connected on rb's and functioning properly other wise the ecu will pull timing.

Can bypass it with resistors to diagnose it though

But your still right :)

Haha nice. Yeah you can trick the ecu into thinking all is ok just to narrow down what your looking for.

Which I'll do soon

Aswell as check all my earths

Don't care if I mask it for matsuri then fix it after, just wanna skid!

Would love to hear if you make any progress.. Having the exact same issue. But pretty sure I'm just gunna pay someone to fix it ha

I'll never take it to a shop to fix it because I'll end up refusing to pay the $100000 bill

What's yours doing? Do you have power in first gear then on boost in 2nd just all spool?

Mines doing heaps of different shit, CAS all the way advanced for it to even drive, just misses and backfires out the screamer pipe on boost, doesnt make power. Now its acting like the afm is disconnected and just dies / wont rev.

But mines td06, nistune, adj cam gears etc swapped off another motor where it all worked fine... so some kind of base timing / tune issue aka something i cant fix in my shed ha.

Timing is a tooth off/slipped belt

Or the knock sensors on that motor are no good

And u can also set base timing, check air fuel ratios in your shed
