zoom

hey,

i got my new zoom mag in the mail today opened it up and saw they have gone a new layout, had a quick flick threw then went out (holidays of WORK ftw)

i picked it up when i got home and had read threw the articles, i had to check the front cover to see if i wasnt sent a fast fours or auto salon magazine as the articles dribbled on about some crap and had no detail in them, that why this magazine was one of the best now i do wanna read the rest of the articles as it will be a waste of time. the new set up is nice and there is a couple of new sections that i think are great (build up piccys and specs (bolger's ve is featured)/ readers rides (to a lesser extent)) i just hope that it doesnt go down hill and turn into another rice mag

rant over

Zoom is pretty much the only mag I buy, though I haven't got the new issue I hope it stays true to the "go before show" motto.

and yes, Autosalon = Rice

i've been a longtime subscriber to ZOOM, and the one thing i'm noticing now is that it's just drag car after drag car

every issue, you can be garunteed a rotor powered drag car, a rotary street/drag car, and a couple other drag cars. starting to piss me off a bit, i look around on my walls and all the ZOOM posters are of nice street cars with all sorts of engine combinations.

the last 6 months or so though i haven't put any of the posters up, as it's always of the main drag feature car. i don't care for drag much :(

i haven't got the new issue yet, but it will be the first from the new editor, so will be interesting to see which direction it heads in

this issue is street cars but there is just no info in the story itself its all in the tech sheets the feature on the s15 on the front cover reads like a interview from the paper

lol i'm 20. but i'd much rather look at cars on my wall, than just plain cream coloured paint :P

and i'm a tech person through and through. but there's only so many times you can get excited about a 13b mazda RX-whatever drag car.

i'd much rather see more engine conversions and stuff. or nicely built up street cars. and would love some more features on circuit cars. like when they used to feature the odd sports sedan or improved prod. car

Ben Ellis and Grant Warne are no longer involved with Zoom, although i think Grant may still freelance for them. They are doing the Otomoto thing now.

Greg Conway (ex fast fours) now heads up Zoom.

The new layout is shithouse, it's just a cluster fark. It's a mess.

as str8e180 said about the super charged v8 in the rail that had a billet block that would have to be one of the better reads out of a mag, with all the biuld up pics and a actual story of how the car happened, in the new issue there is a cosworth powered escort there is 3 paragraphs to the story the rest is pictures

wooo just got the new issue in the mail. can definately tell it's a new editor, just by looking at the front cover!

let's have a bit of a flick through...

...well, it's pretty much just a replica of Fast Fours :S from the layout to the fonts! it's like identical! but, that doesnt matter, coz it's the content that counts.

the feature cars seem pretty Fast Four-ish, they've got go, but a lot of show as well. one of the best bits of the old ZOOM i miss was when they featured a good Backyarder car

and thank god they've brought back the Spec lists for feature cars. the last issue didn't have it, and it pissed me right off, as i often flick through old issues to glance at what a certain car had or what not.

also looks like there's a fair few new segments/regular bits. they look like they should be pretty good.

and thank god Donnon's still onboard. i haven't unloved any piece of his tech writing, ever! :P

i reckon as long as they stick by the Go Before Show motto, it should be fine. if i ever see a civic with a Darth Vader bodykit and more subwoofers than cylinders, that's when i'll it quits :P

Thats it....Zoom is Fu#ked!

Zoom was sweet as, the only one i'll buy (although i have been known to buy ASM every now and then)

If they have someone from fast fours running the show....it's all over.

RIP Zoom

it's tempting. i'll wait for next months issue, see the cars in that.

but yeh, they might need a clip around the ears to get back to the magazines roots

i haven checked out the latest mag, i didnt like on one of the latest issues how they stopped putting down exactly what had been doone to the cars and how quick they were running.

do any of u remember the issue with the red datsun ute with a sr20 pulling 300kws from a stock internal engine, it had the c4 auto on it, with a parachute, well first time out it ran a 9.6 and best run of i heard 9.2 now thats crazy for a stock engine.

do they have any articles on the s14 DEVLSH?

When Autosalon first came out I only bought HPi and SP33D, two best magazines. Autosalon was a ricer mag and the only performance they had were ricer dyno queens.

Then SP33D died off, and all the staff went to Autosalon and it became pretty damn good over time, nice mix of show/street/circuit/drift and drag.

Zoom I've never been a huge fan of, too many rotors and V8 commodores for my tastes. Give me jap piston engines over that shit anyday :P

Dan.
