UPDATE: Victory? Sign my Petition, Save an industry, save jobs, save the environment

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm blatantly asking for help here.

I run an Ewaste Recycler in Adelaide, but due to restrictions imposed by our lovely friends in the federal government we are only days away from closing our doors. We are not the only ones either. Nationwide there are around 500 jobs that will go before Christmas unless something is done.

It can all be fixed though with a simple removal of restrictions. We're not asking for money, but the government won't listen to us without pressure from the people.

We do have the SA State government on our side doing what they can.

Immediate action must be taken to ensure the long term sustainability of the Ewaste Recycling industry.

Ewaste is the fastest growing waste stream in the world, yet the Minister for the Environment Greg Hunt, has refused to acknowledge the clear problems associated with the Co-Regulated National Television & Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS).

The NTCRS should be providing "FREE" drop off points for everyone, but unfortunately there is a cap of 35% when the amount collected is more in the vicinity of 50%. Minister Hunt's response is that local government and state government have to fund the remaining 65%, but what rate payer will want to pay for a service that only a few months ago was free just down the road?

As we're now hitting that 35% 'cap', "FREE" collection points around the country are closing and the flow on effect is that Ewaste recyclers have also closed, are closing or facing imminent financial problems.

Instead of having a booming industry that creates hundreds of jobs, we will now have ewaste stockpiling in our landfills, on our sidewalks, in our businesses, and in our homes.

Please visit www.ewaste.org.au for more details relating to the Scheme and the Recycling industry in Australia.

Please sign our petition here: https://www.change.o...=share_petition

FREE E-Hugs and reps to those that sign.

Cheers all.

Love you long time.

Cheers dude.

That number is just a count down to every hundred.

Really, we're going to need thousands of signatures, so it's a long shot but it's more than worthwhile.

Awesome, thanks Chappy.

We're now almost at 200 signatures.

We've also just received support from SA government ministers who have signed the petition and have sent letters to the federal Minister of Environment Greg Hunt.

Just had a story on ABC24 "The Business" program tonight that aired nationally.

Also forgot about this thread, but on Thursday i'm going to Canberra for a meeting with the man himself, Greg Hunt.

The petition has in fact already worked :D

Update time.

First off, thanks to all that have signed the petition, it has worked!!!

Just goes to show when you have a good no-brainer cause, there's no need for 100's of 1000's of signatures.

Today i had a hell of a lot of media around covering the Environment Minister's press conference on our site to announce that he is driving a review of the scheme immediately.

Newspaper article from today: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/federal-minister-greg-hunt-will-announce-that-ewaste-recycler-aspitech-will-not-close-as-feared-with-140-jobs-saved/story-fni6uok5-1227083437057?sv=e257bb5fdbee677a6a7d1deb1f5421cc&read-from-reading-list=true (look out for another one tomorrow)

Sky News broadcast live from our boardroom at around 2pm, but Channels 7,9 and 10 were also there conducting interviews.
