Sr20de surging and rev dropping

Recommended Posts

my 1990 nissan 180sx (sr20de) started to play up yesterday and i was wondering if anyone knew how to fix it.

while ideling the revs sit at about 1000 and drop down realy low in a pattern, while driving the car surges but only when im not accelerating or decelerating, it even clunks out every now and then. it smells rich and there is exhaust fumes (or smoke) coming out near the exhaust manifold. it has never done this before and i really want it fixed. if anyone know what is wrong please help.

im suspecting a coil/plug issue and im buying new sets soon.

Faulty or dirty AFM

Vacuum leaks

Check those 2 first before you go buy things.

I just took it for another run, after i looked over the vaccum and the afm, and from start to finish it was working perfect, so i dont know if i fixed it by mucking around with a few different things or it was a one-off problem. but if there is anything i can do to prevent it from happening again let me know. thanks

Any hissing sounds, unplug the AFM while the car is running and see if there's any difference. Better yet, swap it with a working one if your mates have a Silvia or something.

Check the plugs, if they are black then it could be a air leak or simply the motor dumping lots of fuel in the engine so check injectors.

Run a ECU diagnostic check too
