Tramlining on the road with 265/35/18 semis

Hey guys. Just got the s15 registered on Wednesday. Got 265/35/18 DZ03G semis on the front and 285/30/18 595 EVOs on the rear.

 

Took it around the block (more like a 4km drive) and noticed the steering snapping/acting weird. Thought I had low tyre pressure/something was loose.

 

Jacked it up and looked at everything. Thought it looked fine so took it to an alignment. Was 4mm toe in on each side in the rear. Got that wound out but front seemed fine. 1.5deg camber in the front.

 

So started driving home and it was still happening. It was as if the tyre would grip and a different spot and pull the steering wheel to one side. It was really weird the first few times because it would almost pull me into another lane.

 

Spoke to a few people and they said it's probably tranlinig but I didn't think it would be this aggressive. It's really annoying because all of a sudden you'll have to turn the wheel suddenly to go in the same direction

 

All ball joints are good. Bushes seem fine.

 

Could I eliminate some of this with solid rack bushes? Just trying to minimise this.

 

Will street tyres stop this from happening? Just curious if others have had a similar issue running semis on the street. Was told its normal and you don't really suffer it on the track. Just want to sort it for driving on the road.

265 up the front it a very wide tyre!

 

I found with my V35 skyline that had 245s up front that the steering wheel would want to move on its own on older more busy roads as the tyres were more sensitive to flaws in the road. Best example I can give you is if you think of a road surface and then throw 10+ years of trucks and heavy vehicles driving on it your going to get lower sections on the road from all the weight pushing down which kind of creates channels that your wheels will want to follow, which causes your steering wheel to move.

Yeah man, I get the concept/how it all happens. Just seeing if there's any way to eliminate it? Or is it because they just grip too much and follow every bump where as normal road tyres would tend to slide around?

Do you really need such wide tyres :S?

 

Would save yourself a bunch of cash and defects driving on the street with a more appropriate setup... Switch in the hectic wheels/tyres when you want to go to downshift.

 

Car would probably be faster with less anyway...

What offset are your front wheels? including spacers

@Junny, why the attitude? I didn't spend any money on them so I thought I'd give them a go while they were on the wheel. Don't see what your post has to do with my question.

 

They came with the wheels I bought so decided to run them up the front.

 

18x9.5 +38 with a 25mm bolt on.

So +13

yeah your car would definitely be faster without a set of 265 dz03's

especially around corners

 

you should swap to a set of 225/40s and have some mad stretch then your car will be fast

What brand in 225/40 would you reccomend? LingLong's or ChingChong's. Which will get me to Downshift faster.

To answer your question no. Eliminating reducing tramlining on public roads with such wide tyres on a s15 front end is ahhh a challenge.

Yeah fair call, I'll see if I get use to it. Will only be driving to and form QR on them, and occasionally for a random drive.

 

But been thinking I'll chuck on some 245/35/18 RSR's on the front for the time being.

+13 seems pretty reasonable.. but you could still try decreasing your scrub radius by switching to smaller spacer / no spacer. as long as the tyres won't rub on anything...

 

other thing to look out for is bump steer.. i.e. car isn't too low, geometry from adjustable arms etc.

 

Bump steer behaves like the name implies - when suspension is compressed, say from a sudden bump in the road, the wheel toes out, so the car steers in whatever direction. Check if happens more under braking as well.

245/265 is the ultimate setup for a street to track Silvia. Any bigger in the front and the tyres don't get warm enough unless your running a full soft 221. It will move across the road and find every bump due to the width. You can make it better with a less aggressive wheel alignment but that's a double edge sword. They are right about them been to big other than mad street cred. What toe settings are in the front and what did you settle on in the rear?

Bump steer with semis is unpleasant and you will tire of it fast. You must have a solid setup for all that tyre width? Should stretch out and and get a second set of wheels.

Bump steer has nothing to do with semis. Bump steer is to do with suspension setup and is often caused from being to low.

You are talking about root cause. I am not. If he ran street tyres with a narrower width on the weekends it wouldn't be an issue.
