Advice on weld-on fittings - steel or alloy

Hi,

 

First of all i am a novice when it comes to fabrication and welding. I did have a quick google but the results i got i did not understand, i am learning and not sure who to ask so thought i would throw a topic up here.

 

I bought a custom stainless intake manifold for my CA18DET. I did not realise at the time of purchase but it does not have sufficient vacuum fittings as the previous owner had binned the idle air control setup (AAC and Air regulator). I want to run this as it will be street driven and occasional track use.

 

I am making a custom bracket with steel plate to mount the AAC and air regulator (mild steel for bracket). So i don't have to modify the AAC i am planning on using weld-on fittings welded to the bracket and weld on fittings on the stainless manifold.

 

I don't have the right gear to weld to stainless so I am going to get someone to weld the fittings on for me (not sure who yet but there are a couple of performance shops in the area I can contact when i have all the parts)

 

I need to purchase weld on barb fittings 4x 3/8" and 1x 1/2" fittings. When i look at the proflow website they have both steel and alloy fittings.

2x of the 3/8" fittings and the 1/2" fitting will be welded to the stainless manifold

 

2x of the 3/8" fittings will be welded to the mild steel bracket (i beleive the steel fittings are obvious choice for these but want to confirm)

 

Which ones do I get?

welding is welding, you dont need a performance specialist. welding stainless is virtually no different to mild steel.

with fittings, use alloy fittings on alloy, stainless fittings for mild/stainless.

 

i am having trouble picturing your setup, post some photo's for better advice

Yea well you can't weld alluminum to steel so you need steel fittings, simple as that.

here's a picture of the instake manifold sitting in place for test fit, still working on the bracket/mounting for the aac but it will bolt onto the forward fuel rail mounting bolt between injecotr 1 & 2 and sit just above fuel rail (fuel rail removed in picture)

2x 3/8" vac lines need to go from AAC to manifold and need an extra 1/2" fitting on the manifold for a hose to go to the air regulator

did you make this yourself? it looks to be aluminium alloy like most intake manifolds. in which case, you will need alloy fittings. if you can't weld it, just tap threads for threaded barbs, this will obviously be trickier for the 1/2" fitting, as the tap will be expensive.

 

 

give it a grind and see if it sparks, if no sparks then its an aluminium alloy. im sure theres a better way, but thats what i've always done

Didn't make it myself, bought it off someone else, shows how much I know I thought it was stainless :lol:

So if I am going to tap threads would i be looking at these kind of fittings?

I found this on the AN thread sizes can I go off this to find right taps or do different fitting manufacturers use different threads?

had a quick look on supercheap website at tap and die set and does not include the AN or metric taps so would need to look around for them

Supercheap have a metric set but it's shit, not hss (so basically for chasing threads only) and you'll only end up using 3 of the metric sizes they include. You're better off buying single hss taps, and threaded barbs.

 

If you're tapping threads, the barbs can be stainless, brass, doesn't matter.

 

Taps are taps, not much to them. there are 3 main kinds, You want the kind with a gradual lead up to the thread cutting. You just buy them as "14mm x 1.25 thread" like you would buying a bolt.
