catfish grow very large....

Types of cat fish grow very large, as in plecos eeltails ect but corydoras ect don't

Nothing like yours but my first tank nevertheless, I'm proud! IMG_1458.jpg

Watch out for that Electric Yellow bro, make sure you have another 2 to keep them in check. They grow very large, and become quite aggressive (ignore online info, its BS).

Mine constantly chases the female, has killed 6 of my 11 white clouds and has killed 2 of my bronze catfish. Because the catfish were bottom feeders and slower, he would pick out their eyes, i had to mercy kill them.

Electric yellows arnt aggressive it was probably an orange zebra or fullborni you shoyldnt mix African rift lake fish with tropical

^Yeah I think I'll just get 1 catfish, I've read they grow large, and others above confirmed that.

Lol your saying a fighting fish is vicious yet you want an Oscar lol the Oscar will eat everything and all the fish you listed are way to big for the tank, maybe get some dwarf American cichlids or a few cat fish

Lol yup, I've never owned Oscars but I know from experience, fighters are pretty territorial! I had a gold fish with 2, next morning, it was floating up the top with no fins.

Do I have to maintain PH levels and all that sort of crap for cichlids/oscars? Or just temp and remove chlorine in the water?

Again only a couple sorts of cat fish grow large, and they only do when you've got them in a big tank, of course a betta is going to attack your gold fish it mistakes them for other male fighters African cichlids have a high ph gh and kh and you have to do weekly water changes

People's thoughts on this for a sump design, curious if there is a rule of thumb for the water height of a refugium

Hmm thanks panda.

I don't want something that needs weekly water changing.

Any ideas?

sorry mate but there is not alot right about that design you will make more bubbles come into your tank than stop. Intake and skimmer in first section then bubble trap. any media you wish to use in next. Bubble trap. Refug. Bubble trap heaters and pumps in last this will hopefully stop your pump sucking in unwanted bubbles and your refug should not get to .Much unwanted mess in there

Don't get fish then, u have a tiny tank. N if u can't be bothered changing 25% of that water a week don't bother,

Where can I find a design of a sump with skimmer refuge and filter element

First you need to buy all your components you want to use. Build a cardboad box up that is the the biggest you can fit into the area you have for your sump. Then put all your components in the box with it in your cabinet so you know that you can get them out once installed I.e your skimmer. Then build your bubble traps or baffles around your components with the same order of water flow as I stated in my last post. IMO you want as much water height as possible in your first chamber Becuase that will be your highest one. The way you work this out is by working out how deep your skimmer needs to be in the water ( most intank skimmers need a consent water level to work and be tuned) then raise your skimmer up on something as high as you can get in your cupboard then measure where the water level needs to be and that will give you your fist baffle height and the most water possible. The rest should be easy

^^^^ no sump off the shelf design will work for you inless you buy a whole setup with all off the components with it. And that's if you can find one that will fit in the space have

I thought I should start a frag rack up

The white ones are bits of my green pocci that just havent seen enough light yet, All the pocci frags were taken from spots under the main colony so have no colour when fragged to begin with. As you can see within a week three of them (first bunch of frags) already have awesome green colour :)

Oh if it's 25% then yeah I would do that, thought you meant the all of it.

I'm just going to go with fighters then. I know how to keep and maintain them.

Thanks

Just bought me one of these. 4 ft tank with dividers and built in filters.

$50 with a 1mt 2x T5 light.

If anyone is interested the guy is selling all his tanks for dirt cheap!

Took everyone's advice and bought it, so now I have more options yeah?

Thinking I'll keep the splitters in place for now and make 1 of them a bristlenose breeding chamber. The filters are air powered, apparently the guy said it's quieter and uses less electricity.

Told me he cleans it once a month, and minimal water change because of how effective the filters are.

My tank is going great, I felt that the cycle was all done so I got my "proper" fish in

Green terror, blood parrot, snow white zebra/albino zerba, elec yellow, elec blue and some unknown blue chiclid.

Green terror is one aggro bastard!

Finally managed to get a 100w Eheim Jager heater to replace the titanium one that I think was rusting. So the tank had all the algae removed, heater replaced, skimmer got cleaned and the reflectors for my T5 lights had all the rust sanded back and polished so they're almost like new again. Hopefully this helps everything as my corals were starting to recede. After one day they do look like they're coming back.

I just wish I could get the stuff to finish off my LEDs locally, then I can get it bit by bit as having to order it from the states is a bitch.

In saying that though, I think I've convinced my wife to get me my new tank setup for my 30th... 900l x 600w x 300h with external overflow and waterfall type returns. Just wondering if I should got 1200 x 900 x 300 though. Heh

Put in an order together and split the postage? I think the $32 is their flat rate, as $60 odd worth of gear worked out to be nearly $100 with postage. Heh

My titanium heater was rusting where the lead went into the heater, not the heater bar itself.

Wow... That's nuts. When I put together the order I'll let you know. If you still need the lenses I'll tack them on. Not too sure when it'll be though.

Anyone got any ideas as to how much more "larger" fish I can fit in here? About the same size as the green terror.

none.

they are all very messy eating fish and you will struggle to keep the water quality at a reasonable level. I had two oscars under 30cms each in a 4ft tank and they needed a 50% water change every week. something which i ended up having to give up as the mainenance was too much

So I've started putting a lot of thought into the dimensions of my new tank. Initially I thought 900x600x300mm, with an external ctc overflow on the 600mm end. Because I want the exposed rock formation surrounding the return, I'm thinking this size may not be big enough. Now I'm contemplating 1000x750x400, still with an external weir on the shorter end, which should be big enough to allow me a larger range of fish and can still be set up as a shallow lagoon. This should be around 300ltrs, excluding displacement from rocks and sand, etc.

What are people's opinons?

Hey guys,

Just got back from a 6 week holiday and was looking at ordering some stuff online, unfortunately some of my mates though it was a great idea to kill all my icons and browser and replaced my desktop with a frightening about of gay porn.

i am looking to find a few sites, one a small Australia site that SIDD you are on it, small but really good, the second was a LED ordering site, and third was a larger Australian tank site but then linked you to a online aquarium supply site that gave discounts to members.

any infor that would be awesome.

Just got back today from overseas and thank-god my mum/sis looked after the tank well. I mean the glass is filthy but atleast they topped up the water and fed the fish.

Im on these two forums Spudnic:

http://www.masa.asn.au/phpBB3/ - Aus site

http://www.thereefuge.com.au/board/ - Aus site

Also on here but never post anything.

http://reefcentral.com/ - World wide one. Huge and so many awesome tanks in here

wow my tank has bombed..... went overseas for a month, and when i got back, 2 days later i needed surgery for a hernia, long story short, the last month and a half my parents have been looking after my tank.

Now before i left i had a small small patch of cyno, but it was under control and not spreading, i get back and its engulfed half the rock and a duncan coral too!

Now all levels were normal, salt, PH, ammonia etc.... except.... nitrates were at over 100, it is litterally off the scale, the colour of the api test kit water is the same colour as the cyno! :o

seems ive lost 2 corals too, my toxic green hammer and a fluro green/purp inverted hammer. i mean really? my 2 most expensive corals are dead? why couldn't the brown ones have died!

o well treating the cyno with EM now, removed my protien skimmer, going to clean it up while its out, and day after tomorrow need to start a full tank water change over a week or so, perhaps 30% at a time.

problem being because i just had my hernia operation i literally cant lift over 5kg, so what a pain this is going to be!

worst time!!

and why did this happen, told my old man only 1 cube of food a day, he was also giving them spectrum! :hammer:
