hey guys

Last week I received my birthday present from my mrs which was a cannon 500D with both EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and a EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS lenses. This is my first dslr and I am really excited about taking some awesome photo's.

At the moment I have just been trying to understand all the components to this camera, I have read the beginners thread in this section and have been looking at everyones photos to get the jist on how to take some good photo's.

So here are some of my first photos i ever took, no tripod and just mucking around with some of the settings, still very much trying to understand the thing.

The hard word is always welcome, let me know what i'm doing wrong

Welcome to the photography section.

Great sunset shots there. I like the last one :)

Well from what i can see in the thumbnails.

Can you please resize your photos before uploading it. There are free programs like infraview that can re-size photos. Otherwise use photoshop etc..

Cheers

Good job mate.

What ISO where these taken at? Try locking the ISO down to 100 (or 200) if possible to get rid of that grainy spotty (noise) look in the darker parts of your photo :)

Cheers, J

no photochop has been used in any of these photos, still trying to understand how too.

here are some of my favourite shots from tonight and yesterday, i really like my sunset shots..laugh.gif plus had to throw one in of the dog

I cheated on the previous sunset shots and just had it on auto but i messed around a fair bit the last couple of days with it on full manual

is this a good size or should i go smaller/bigger? I'm new to this

What can I change to really get rid of the noise in these sunset photos?

Hey some good pictures. The 18-55 lense is pretty crappy try using the 55-250 more you'll notice a big difference. I got the same package but the 450D and the 55-250 is much nicer.

Some nice pics mate! the sunset ones are a big improvement! Well done.

It looks like your aperture is very low (3.0 or 5.0ish) as your images have a lot of depth of field and blur, this isnt very appealing for your sunset shots.

It does however look good with your 'dog' photo :)

try an aperture setting of F11 or something for your sunset shots. You can see in your shots that the foreground is very crisp and clear and sharp, but the rest of the photo isnt.... Thats due to the above and the your focus point im guessing.

Your last photo is a bit over exposed... the whites are bit blown out. But you have a good depth of field though which is actually really effective :)

try to include some of your metadata with your photos (EG: F stop, shutter speed, ISO etc)

They are some crazy settings!! Your dipping well into the "motion blur/shake" under 1/100th's. Try to keep it above 1/100th's unless your panning or don't have a tripod with you. It will look fine on your screen but once you get home and view it on your computer you will be disappointed.

F/29?! I thought kit lenses only go up to F22?

I like some of these shots, keep it up and keep practicing it's the only way to learn!

Any advice is good advice mate, i'm a complete beginner and I have seen some of your photo's and there pretty mad.

yeah i have a pretty decent manfrotto tripod, but i always forget to take it with me. I will start using it more often.

I read up on the white balance the other day so i mucked around with that at my sisters halloween party and i got some pretty cool photos. I will post these up tomorrow

I noticed that for some of the night time shots (cityscape's) you shooting at f22, with iso 800. There is no need to shoot at that iso if you have the tripod.

Try f8, iso 100 and shutter speed will vary a bit. Maybe go up to iso 400 at most.

But you are improving which is good. Keep at it mate.

love the angles of your new city night shots (the first two mostly).

Last two shots are great!! Love them both very much! Although, have you got a photo of the liberty without the light painting around it? I think just the photo alone would look fantastic.
