I'm tinkering with the idea that facebook isn't such a great thing for certain people and there didn't seem to be any articles/discussions online other than the usual 'privacy' debate. You may/may not agree but I thought I'd just throw it out there for a bit of debate. I find it interesting the way fb has taken off and how obsessive people have become with it, not everyone, just certain characters, and how it might not be healthy.

I've wasted plenty of time on there, have done some status whoring and gradually watched the community find its own standards in terms of what's acceptable and unaccetable (note the decline in status updates and especially negative/whiny status upates these days). I don't really have any horror stories and I'm quite amazed that I haven't seen more people shamed/embarrassed for things online where there's such opportunity, I guess there's that equilibrium where everyone has something to hide, or maybe my friends are a bit more sensible. I can't really imagine what it's like for kids, I'm sure it's pretty f**ked growing up with online social networking altogher (I just missed that boat by a few years).

It's great for keeping in touch with friends but then there's that facet of "collecting" people from the past and not actually making conversation with them (not because you don't have time, but 'cos you never really knew them that well and can't be bothered), just having their profile for your social perving and vice versa. A friend of mine won't use his real name and has just added work mates for a bit of banter, I asked him why he doesn't want to use his real name and he said he fears that peers from the past will see that he's not so successful in life. I'm not a statusy guy so that kind of opened my eyes to how many people use it to flaunt their shit when they're doing well, and how this could fuel bitterness/jealousy for other people who aren't doing so well. I hate the idea that everyone is using fb to judge each other in that superficial sense, it's gay.

I could list a few more reasons why I think it's kinda bad (internet addiction, exes, stalking, relationship stuff, work) but I'll leave that to someone else. I also understand it's up to you what you divulge about yourself and how you use it, like I said I just wanted to hear any thoughts on the topic.

Its funny you should post this, because just today i was contemplating deleting mine for more then one of the above mentioned reasons.

I definitely think people are worse off having FB, I honestly believe it tends to make you less social more then anything. I remember if i bumped into an old mate i hadnt seen in years, we'd stay and chat, even grab a bite together, these days its like "hi, just FB me".

Among other things its just another facade, except this time (for the most part) the individual chooses whats shown, instead of what it really is.

...but then maybe were just looking into it to far.

I'm living overseas at the moment, so it's really awesome for me.

But on the flip side, I kind of wish that I never posted anything about myself on the internet at all. Paranoia and all.

Facebook has the largest face mugshot database in the world, which I'm not completely cool with.

But a bit more on topic - I think a lot of people don't care anymore. People talk about their emotions in their status updates. People talk about the dumb things they did. People can be embarrassed in photos they are tagged in, statuses, etc. Our parents' generation used to be quite self conscious, but we seem to be more immune to that aspect of perceived image.

Got one but manly use it because I work on off shore or on shore remote location oil rigs. It comes in handy when someone I worked with is on there and can help me out with a problem.

Also, keep in contact with the missus and family when I'm away in another country it's cheaper then a phone call.

Get sick of Reading song lyrics and emo *milkshakes* writing things about how their life is so bad and they should end it all.

Other then when I'm away, I don't hang on FB all day. Rather go out and see the people and do something.

I got one, mainly use it for party invites haha, it's the only way people organize birthdays and piss ups. I can't stand people with no life who just constantly talk shit, about a month ago I got pro-active and deleted 70 odd people all

the knobs and whore single mums from school who have nothing better to do, it's f**king sad really. (I say that while dribbling shit on ns at 1 in the morning lol)

i started mine up when i went and live overseas, barely any of my mates used msn still, and my phone didnt work overseas (although i had skype). but generally i was used to keeping in touch with people by going to parties, town or the pub, so without them, i wanted a way i could still keep in contact.

i still use it now, but for me it's mostly a tool to keep in touch with people, keeping up to date with events and and also promotion. there's also a side of "networking", but really that comes into the promotion side, as i dont really wanna meet new people online so much, but if i need something, or want to sell something etc etc, i want to have exposure to as many people as possible.

the problem i have is it's impact on people, but it doesnt matter whether it's facebook or something else, it's the way of the internet. people are becoming dead shits.

i dont need to explain why shit like facebook is f**king people up as im sure most people here understand.

Don't have family on it, just girls. That's all it's good for, finding girls from your younger years, posting up whore style pictures. Other then that I could not give a f**k what others are doing or their status sooking.

Facebook is good for trolling, that's about it.

It gives people this sense of false self worth. No one cares if you're drinking with a mate, no one cares you're going to bed. If you tried that in real life, people would tell you to STFU, but online retards validate them.

It also feeds the ego of whinging girls. Write something depressing and disjointed for no reason and random dudes jump on it becoming the biggest pussies.

I use it as my primary form of communication. Wanna send me a text message for free? Facebook. Wanna invite me to something and make sure I don't forget? Facebook.

I agree, there are certain people who can't handle it. The ones who feel the need to air their dirty laundry in front of everyone usually get deleted from my friends list pretty quickly. I also have only the people I know and actually want to talk to on my friends list. People I'd be happy to have a beer with if I ran into them in town. Anyone else is either ignored or removed from my friends list.

If used appropriately, it's an awesome tool. But it's easy to slip into unhealthy social habits on it. Just gotta remind yourself that online friendship doesn't equal a real friendship, and more than one person can see what you post in public.

It's only good for checking out your mate's hot 14 year old sister's pictures from the comfort of your own chair.

And you don't even feel bad for doing it.

Yep +1 to you.

And yes, in short of what you said, ppl become social retards and forget how to communicate in the "real" world.

No, some people here understand, and some others don't understand. Those that don't understand have helped those that do understand to have a true understanding of the epidemic.

I use it... Its good for info and catching up with people BUT i try not to get to caught up in it all. I dont make a status update every 5 mins like some people but I do try to stay aware of what info i put on my facebook.

You can tell the people its not healthy for, the people who update there status with shit like "I just had lunch" or "I am about to have a nap"... News Flash no one gives a f**k!

The great thing about facebook is the social interaction and the ease of communication with people. Also the sharing of content is very good.

The only negative side of facebook is the attention whoring, either through status updates or whatever.

Chose your friends as your friends, then you've got no problems, if someone's writing shitty updates call them on it and tell them to stop being a dick.

Like was said by the TC, it's a new tech, and the community has evolved and developed balance, it's developed it's own terms of what is acceptable and what is just annoying.

What is especially annoying is when people delete their facebook, it's like cutting yourself out of a social circle, it'd be like one day just saying "f**k I'm sick of recieving SMS's, I'm going to get rid of my mobile". You're just excluding yourself from invitations and communication. Side story, I was heading down to Canberra and I remembered a high school friend of mine lives there, was going to try and contact him to catch up for drinks but no, he decided long ago that facebook is stupid, so I couldn't get in contact with him, his mobile had changed since high school and I didn't know any of his new friends in Canberra.

There's no real downside to facebook if you're not an idiot. Hating on it just seems like the new "cool" thing to do... Oh wow, you're so different, nonconformist and rebellious....

I did it the other way around; hated it then joined.

Agreed with everything you said though. The problem with facebook is the total lack of moderation of what is acceptable. Dead shits get praise, humorous people get shunned.

It's not bad.... I have times where I am on it a lot and times where I barely touch it.

What annoys me is these people who say how bad facebook is for your privacy and the risk of your details getting leaked. FFS, if you're scared of details being leaked, don't put those details on there in the first place and modify the privacy settings..?? Stupid people..

Oh and if there's people who don't stop posting shit, you can just hide their updates.

I wasn't aware hating on fb was some kind of new fad but I formed these opinions myself and I think the argument has a bit of merit because a few people seem to agree?

I dont mind it, my friends posted up an 'embarrassment horse' photo album though and it had pics of us throwing up form drinking too much , being drunk in general and stuff, i had to untag myself due to my teacher adding us all on fb so she could send us assignments, tell us when our next class was etc

also use it as a call out, easier to write one status asking if anyone wants to go for a drive or something then on a public forum (cops) or sending 20 or so sms

I dont use facebook. My theory is if I want to talk to someone I will fkn call em, if I dont want to talk to them I wont call/text msg them.

I dont give a shit about what people are doing every 5 seconds and I really dont feel the need to update anyone else of my going ons.

Simple.

I use it. But I have a rule of not adding work people or things like that. People at my work don't need to know what I do after hours or in my days off.

I get sick of ppl who write about how bad their life is and how hard done by they are. I usually tell then to man up and go killthemself already. Then block

Great thing about FB and Twitter for me is getting the bands, tv series, skate teams and news updates. I am so up to date with what is going on in china its not funny, makes for great convo and brownie points with my co workers/owner.

Apart from that the negatives are the amount of winging single mums and dads from high school i hide or remove... its unbearable. Some of them are so miserable and attention seeking it is depressing. Also the fall out when my ex an i broke up, we became single and suddenly it was everybodys business when it was a very personal and private thing. Never do that again.

My gf and i arent friends on fb, same with alot of couples our age, we like to not have any outside influences on our relationship.

I also find that following your favorite porn stars on twitter can have many benefits.
