upgrading my camera

Recommended Posts

hey all, im looking at upgrading my camera as i want to buy more lenses but dont want to buy them for my old olypmus e520 and waste my money. so im gonna buy a new camera.

so what is recommended for some better quality shots, or is any one selling a relatively new set up? or any good deals going around the place?

was thinking maybe cannon 60d or 7D

maybe thinking of spending around 1500-2000 (either local or from the states) on either just the body or body + lens depending on what is recomended.

sooooooo recommend away :)

thanks

Cant go wrong with either 60d or 7d. But advice is to go into a store and try one out and get the feel of it.

60d and the 7d are two totally different cameras btw.

ah k cool. also in what ways are they different? you mean in terms of one intermediate and one professional or more one is good for stills /portraits and the other for motor sports/ action shots?

Its just like the Holden / Ford thing. At the end of the day the name doesn't mean much, it's what you do with it that counts

lol if I were you get 5D Mark II full frame body and start with 50mm f/1.8 lens (around $100-150 for that lens)

you have the pro body and buy the L lens later.

I bought 60D ... thought I am just gonna learn photography... now regretting not to get the 5D in the first place

60D and 7D.. not much of the different imo, 7D have dual Digic 4, faster burst speed. prob AF little bit better and dual SD slot.

But if you are a nikon guy, get D7000. I found NIKON pic more pleasing than CANON for some reason.

if you are on a budget, then 550d/600d/60d are your three main bodies, they are all within $300 of each other, all have the same CMOS, all are 1.6x crop. Each obviously has a tiny bit more novely features, but all give the same level of 'performance'.

if you want weather proofing and more finite iso/kelvin/shutter speeds, gravity features, then 7D is great.

You only need to go 5dmkII when you go beyond what the above crop sensored bodies are offering. For beginner/ammeture enthusiast, you honestly dont need to go full frame, can you justify $2500 for body only? thats up to you, since you can get a 550/600d for $700-800 and spend the rest on good L or 3rd party lenses.

following shots taken with the above mentioned D7000/35mm f/1.8 combo. pretty sick bang for your buck option I reckon, technique will make it in the end but the 35mm barely ever comes off my camera haha. D7000 is sick with 2 memory card slots, full hd video etc etc does well at high ISO

Depends on your budget really.

I picked up myself a 5D Mark II body for just over 2k then bought the 50mm f1.8 lens. Takes seriously epic photos! If your on a budget though I reckon a 550d twin lens kit (AKA the Kiss X4 if you want it on the cheap, just a different name). 550d twin lens kit is about $900 - $950 and fits L series EF lenses so plenty of lens options.

Digital Rev dida comparison between a cheap body with good lenses (550D with L series lenses) VS an expensive body with a cheap lens (1DS Mark iv with a cheap ass Sigma lens). The 550D outperformed the 1DS easily, and that's easily 6 or 7 times more expensive.

550D also has the same sensor as the 7D ;)

yeah read that about the 7d and 550 and also the 60d. not much of a difference apart from the wether tight body and a little higher iso on the 7d and shutter speed. would prob go the 60d due to the better hd video with volume control out of cannon. planning on around maybe 1700-2 g all up.

With that budget I'd get a 550D / 60D body and a 24-105 L series lens. Plus even a 50mm 1.8 for $100 on top. All up

Would be about $1600 for 550D or $18-$1900 for 60D.

Plus then you have a kick ass pro lens and a nice low aperture prime. Would make for a killer budget setup

next up from the D7000 is prob the D700 which is full frame which will soon be replaced by a d800. there is honestly no need to go full frame if you are just starting out. Some realy excellent photos .Ryan. with the combo. i love the 35mm lens too, and yeah it hardly comes off.

and the iso on the d7000 is insane, here is one handheld at night, 3200 iso

dont expect to be taking photos like .Ryan though  night drifting it so annoying at WTAC i took like 1000 photos and only like a handful came up good to use you have to teach yourself about the shutter speeds the ISO what lenses are good f stops editing the photos after etc its not like your everyday cheap $100 digital cam that you can point and shoot :P

hahaha you should see my photos from the middle of last year man, so bad haha. all comes down to practice practice practice. while was at uni (read, doing absolutely nothing) I made an effort to get out and shoot as much as possible, went to the zoo, beach etc etc.

also helps that I've attended every drift event at winton since july last year haha
