Yay! Sounds like everyone has a bad case of G.A.S (Gear Aquisition Syndrome) I myself currently have: Canon 18-55 and 55-250mm Standard Kit Lens. - They are alright, good for a couple turns @ Winton, but slow on AF. Canon 1.8f 50mm. Love this lens. Best bang for buck you can buy IMO. Tokina 10-17 Fisheye. Got this as I wanted something "fun". Can get some amazing landscape shots running at 17mm where it isnt too "fishy". Between myself and Jason12 (housemate) we swap and change between our lens' so we have a good selection between us. (His new 300mm + Macro was fun to use at Drift Attack.. Pictures up soon.) But I am currently looking at getting myself something that covers a bit more of a range. (mainly for more motorsports as that 55-250 gets a bit short at winton, and the AF is slow as hell, but would really like something is a good all rounder) So here is a bit of a run down. Camera: 550D Budget: under 1k, but really, I wouldnt mind pay the extra for L series Please feel free to gives some advice/opinions on the below choices. (L Series might be a pipe dream, unless I can find something 2nd hand, or sell a kidney) List I have got so far:

Tokina AF 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 - Bit slow @ 4.5 $500ish

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM $650ish (IS for a bit more?) Obviously a drop in zoom, but ohh the crispness)

Sigma APO 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 - Bit slower than I really would of liked, But I could make it work)

Sigma APO 150-500mm f5-6.3 - A lot slower but, 500mm zoom means I can shoot from the carpark at Winton

Canon EF 300mm f4.0 L IS USM $1.3- Bit over Budget, but gives me the zoom and Crispness

Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 L IS USM - Even more over Budget - gives me enough zoom and the crispness... Regards

Want to elaborate on this? I haven't had a problem with a 10-22 and i owned one for 3 years. Used it everywhere. It does suffer from CA a little but it depends what your shooting and the light also. I prefer the Sigma 10-20 though.

dont go past the 100-400 Canon, you could find a decent new one for 1600 ish and they are GREAT value, for outdoor, drift work... most of my drift stuff was taken with one...

I am actually talking about the F-stop of that lens, I even find my 24-70L is useless on F/2.8 indoor, bump the ISO to 1600 ... you get a lot of noise but quite brigt with F/2.8 but it's all depends on the lightning inside the room.

 

I usually use a natrual light when it comes to shooting indoor.

Yeah I have a sigma macro 70-200 f/2.8 and 18-50 f/2.8. I'm just rocking simga's atm but my next lens will be nikon

 

Definitely need the 70-200 for Panning shots although I have seen some shot at 50mm that look pretty cool.

Get a prime lens. Do you shoot full body, headshots, 3/4, etc etc...

 

I highly recommend a 30 1.4 or a 50 1.4

 

How much space do you normally have? This will help if you can foot zoom enough.

 

Your better setup would be like something like a 30 1.4 and an 85 for headshots etc...

outdoor shoots i have as far as i want in studio only about 3 meters MAX i do have a 50mm already though i love that for portraits love bokeh

looking at a 8mm fish theres a rokinon... no Auto focus and maybe manual exposure on the canon... but its dirt cheap and for the stuff i want to do (night skies) it dont need to focus... i usually turn it off...

Plenty of talk about the 10-20, so il just add, I've had one for years and it ain't going anywhere.

Definitely money well spent.

 

Looking at finishing my lense needs off and a 70-200 2.8 is locked in, IS or not I don't mind, will go second hand to keep the price down also.

 

And I want something sharp for portrait stuff, I've got a sigma 24-70 f2.8 which is awesome but I wanna try something sharper.

Now im pretty keen on a canon 50 1.4 but is it worth the extra 300 over the 1.8?

 

Was also prowling eBay and came across a 85 1.4, it's made by samyang, anyone familiar with them? It's cheap and I assume nasty but I'm almost keen to give it a go.

I just bought a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 for my girlfriends Sony A33, for her birthday. Apparently it kicks ass, all raving reviews on Youtube and all over the net. Paid $669US.

 

I hope she appreciates it as much as I would. She's in London, travelling Europe for the next 8 months, so it should be a good upgrade from her kit lens. I was initially looking for a fixed lens with good low light capabilities for when she is out at night with her friends, but this 17-50mm would probably be better suited for her travels and sight seeing. Maybe next time.
