S13 Silvia - New Engine in loves the thrashing. done first comp and matsuri

Recommended Posts

car some how survived getting down to Mallala going round then driving home then 5 hours of pizza delivery driving.

we were having overheating issues the whole day though anytime the engine was over about 3000rpm the temp would just creep up just driving to Mallala we hit 96 degrees (doing 100 in 5th is like 3100rpm).

then dad went out for the first session and wasnt really giving the car heaps of shit was not short shifting 2nd though but after the 10min session the temps had skyrocketed to 117 degrees he wasn't looking at the powerfc temp like i told him to.

let it cool down abit didnt get a chance to check the levels before next session goes back out 15 mins this time and comes in one lap early when he realizes he is on 122 degrees so for the rest of the day i told him to just do 3 lap sessions and he took his car around for one while we let the siliva cool down to get some more coolant into it.

so i had to baby it home form mallala doing 80-90 the whole way home to keep the revs down kept temp at 89 degrees. then doing pizza delivery managed to keep it down between 80-85 hit 90ish going up some hills.

maybe that aftermarket waterpump isnt so great or we need a new better cooling radiator.

Pictures.

was fun and next time we go out if overheating issues are fixed i get to take it out for a couple of sessions.

Looking good man. I'm pretty tempted to start delivering pizza for a 2nd job, just to break up the boredom of stacking shelves. Will probs buy an old piece of shit civic for like $400 instead of having to use my S13

What water pump did you get? Was it OEM Nissan?

I actually bought one straight from the Nissan dealership for $95. Specific to S13 as well, the S14 ones have a slightly different design, I suspect they wouldn't pump as efficiently in an s13 block.

It was some aftermarket direct copy of oem we went to Nissan first but there was no s13 pumps in south Australia and the guy didn't know how soon he could get one in so we had to end up driving around to car shops till we found a waterpump for s13 sr20. It seems to do ok for normal street driving the cooling system we have might grab one or the asi rads off ebay see if that helps. If not something serious might be wrong with my engine yeah?

don't think the water pump would be the problem if it was a new pump...

still got stock radiator?

Yeah still got standard rad don't think it could stand up to the track work. Never knew track work was so demanding on a car. Don't wanna go all out and buy a koyo rad to find out that it's something else causing the problem. Hopefully with a new radiator we can get it back out on the track and staying cool enough.

Did you guys bleed all the air out of the coolant system after replacing the pump?

And just swap in a alloy rad and use the stock shroud and fan. i use this set up and it thrives.. hottest its ever gotten was 102degrees. thats after 5 back to back laps drifting on a 34 degree day.

we did some thing were we had the heater on and the cap off and kept topping it up as it went down not sure if thats how your meant to get the air out of the system but thats what my mate texted me to do over the phone. (me and dad suck at cars lol)

thinking of just buying this cheap one and see how we go from there next event is tailem bend 1/8th mile drag so shouldn't have to much problem running car flat out for short bursts

need new rear tyres as well so there goes my next fortnight pay =/

wouldnt buy a cheap rad from ebay man, they are shocking mine lasted about 2 months.

my currenct one was a little bit more expensive. but its 10x better.

any tips on what you got? there is a fair few threads saying the ASI ones are decent enough for the price

ASI are really good bang for buck, its your best bet. especially if your going to be tracking it here and there

new radiator arrived today =D so decided to wake up and install it but forgot to go buy more coolant first -.- got to excited so i dont have enough to fill it up till someone comes home so i can steal there car.

had to trim down the fan shroud to make it fit hope it wont effect cooling to much and it sits pretty close to the engine block at the top but the fan still spins and doesn't clip anything so im guessing its all good for now till i go thermos if i have to.

heres some pics of it in the car (didn't find a camera till after i had got it all in)
