HT.net motorkhana

Recommended Posts

Other states are having big meets, seems the ACT is full of elitist wankers that (generally) don't want to do anything, go anywhere or socialise outside their own comfortable bubble, so I'm hoping a driving event may change that.

Plan is to organise a bigger event than 15 people standing around in a cold park like last time, what's the deal with organising a motorkhana event? Can I simply contact MGCC and get a date, get people organised & promote it as a Hartuned.net motorkhana event then let them take care of all the timing, etc on the day?

Organising a Motorkhana would be hard. You need to have the backing of a CAMs approved club doing all the organising and supplying officials and a Clerk of course. The MGCCC events are really well run and extremely popular, but I doubt they would be willing to run one under the guise (or in conjunction with) HT, as they already do 4 events a year and I think they struggle with that (as they need to organise their members, officials, CAMs approval for the event, sup regs, and the facility itself which is a huge hassle).

For the MGCCC guys it's a bit of a labour of love, so I don't know how they would feel with a bunch of us young hooligans taking advantage of that. There's a lot of work involved in the CAMs approval (submitting sup regs, etc) and the membership that they have with CAMs could be limited to X (4) events a year. In regards to locations, the only place in/near ACT where an event could be run is either the Hillclimb track or Sutton Road, the Sutton Road facility is notoriously difficult to deal with (I think the MG guys are lucky the get to use the surface as much and when they do, I believe this only happens cause someone has a friend etc).

The situation certainly sucks. Don't be put off though! Keep at it.

They also only do 4 a year because that's the only time they can get the track. Hillclimb circuit is not appropriate for a motokhana. There is no large paved area and the track is skinny. Not much you could do with cones around there.

So its either Sutton Road, or a car park at the airport or something. the MGCC motokhana is already mega popular, usually filling up before the event. They usually keep it at around 42 maximum drivers. Even then last time we only had 1 go of each of the last two tracks because of time limits. Advertising it on here too much would only make that problem worse.

I think we'd have to set it up as a separate event. It can be a similar format, perhaps a little less formal. We would need to contact Sutton Road to see what thier requirements are. I know it costs a bit, MGCC make a loss on every event at $40 per driver. Shannons insurance kicks in the rest apparently. You could talk to Kent Brown (MGCC) to see how he did it. I'm sure he wouldn't mind it.

PS: I don't think we have to be CAMS affiliated to run the event at Sutton. It classified as a Non-Speed event, hence no Helmets are required. The Texi the NSW mob ran at the same facility was not CAMs affiliated. The main issue it going to be insurance costs.

If we could get 15 along to a BBQ maybe we could run a private track day at MDTC.

I know not everyone is into circuit work but I'm sure we could get all you drifters into time attack mode with a couple of prizes on the line.

Though experience tells me that you'll get a lot of interest then no one would turn up quoting car troubles or financial problems.

So if we go down this line I would get everyone to pay up first before booking with Marulan.

I have spoken to mdtc before and from memory you need more than 15 for a private day to make it worth while. I 'll see if I can dig up the email.

We'd easily get the numbers if it was a NSW/ACT private day - I'd been looking into organising one at Wakefield as a grip & drift day but there's nothng available this year & the dates for next year aren't available yet.

Why not another skidpan day. Those were good fun back in the day

Because I'm trying to get something happening that involves more than a dozen people rocking up.

True that, but we should do skidpans more often anyway. Im in for any MDTC days we do. Wakefield as well.

i thought there was less interest in the skidpan now since the resurface and they want 180 for the full inside and outside?

You could always run the event under AASA. Much less BS than CAMS. Pay your money, get your permit and then youre insured. http://australianautosportalliance.com/

The main issue would be finding a good venue that's not too far away. Back in newy my club ran a sweet motorkhana in the car park of the Knights stadium. Had so much fun that I delaminated my tyres by the end of the day.

If my engine is run in by then I am keen!

Nigel.

The old drag strip would be good venue but the owner of the airport land that the strip resides on isn't exactly known for his enthusiasm when it comes to using that piece of bitumen.

This isnt bad Sol, maybe we could hire some form of carpark here, surely there is someone who will let us do a skid on their tar. Old russell offices has heaps of room (though no run off :) )

Does anyone have family or close friends with industrial land in or around canberra? Does anyone have a member of the Police in their family, we could hit the police up? Use their carpark for off the street motorsport? It's a long shot I know, but it would be good publicity for them.

^ Tried that approach with the NSW police to utilise their driver training centre at Goulburn. Approached media, Drift School, Motive DVD, Amy Boatwright etc playing the whole thing as a 'you want us off the streets, we want to keep it off the streets' but it never got any support. NSW Police weren't interested, I was told in more polite terms to bugger off.

^nice approach, but I can see that happening, they'd rather issue defects and fine people on mobile phones than support local enthusiast.
